Emerging markets attract both foreign direct investment and portfolio flows. These flows respond strongly to global risk appetite, interest rate differentials, and domestic fundamentals. When volatility rises, exchange rates can experience sharp depreciation or excessive appreciation. The effects, however, are not always linear. Threshold regression helps identify points at which the relationship changes in strength or direction.

Researchers first construct measures of capital flow volatility. They use rolling standard deviations or realized volatility of net capital flows. Several insights emerge from this combined framework. Threshold effects often appear during periods of elevated global uncertainty. Spillover intensity tends to rise when capital flows reverse suddenly. Moreover, countries with stronger fundamentals and deeper financial markets usually absorb shocks more effectively. These patterns carry direct policy relevance. Central banks can adjust intervention strategies and macroprudential tools according to the prevailing regime.

The research design remains transparent and replicable. Clear documentation of volatility measures, threshold selection, and spillover metrics strengthens the analysis. Future work can extend the sample or incorporate additional asset prices. For now, the focus stays on capital flow volatility and exchange rate dynamics in emerging markets. Threshold regression and spillover analysis together provide a sharper view of non-linear and interconnected effects.
